Liverpool – Arsenal

A goal each from Sadio Mane, Andrew Robertson and debutant Diogo Jota were enough to inspire a clinical Liverpool side to a 3-1 win over Arsenal on Monday night, September 28. Both sides came into the match in relatively fine form, having picked two wins from their season openers. However, it was Liverpool who took their chances and made them count as they hosted the Gunners at Anfield.

The Reds were keen to earn a perfect revenge over Arsenal, having lost the Community Shield to the side during the new season’s curtain raiser played at Wembley Stadium. But they had to rally from a goal down to cart home all the three points following Alexander Lacazette’s earlier opener in the 25th minute. The Frenchman found the back of the net just minutes after Alexander-Arnold had hit the crossbar after he spanked a half-volley towards goal from 25 yards.

Lacazette’s goal lasted just three minutes as Liverpool equalised through Mane who cushioned a volley into an empty net. Robertson made it 2-1 shortly as he poked the ball past Leno to ensure the hosts went into the break leading. The second half of the match saw Lacazette waste a glorious chance to restore parity for his side in the 63rd minute despite being brilliantly set up by Dani Ceballos. Debutant Diogo Jota put the game beyond the Gunners when he was brought on in place of Mane as he scored the hosts third goal of the match. The win fired Liverpool to second on the standings with nine points on level with leaders Leicester.
